These are the Top 10 ‘Gut Check’ Questions that Overton Leadership Associates asks young adults ages 17-25 to determine whether or not they are on a pathway to success:

Top 10 ‘Gut Check’ Questions for Young Adults

  1. If you are a Parent, how many hours have you spent actively teaching or caring for your children this week?
  2. If you are a person of Faith, how many hours have you devoted to prayer, study and other spiritual-related activities this week?
  3. If employed, how many hours of paid Work have you performed this week? If you are unemployed, then how many hours have you spent actively pursuing job leads, conducting online job searches, and performing interview preparation?
  4. If you are a high school or college student, how many hours have you spent Attending Classes, conducting laboratory experiments, and studying this week?
  5. If you are in a job skills training program, how many hours have you spent Training on your craft this week?
  6. If you have been assessed by several, independent subject matter experts as having professional-level talent in a specific area (sports, music, art, etc.), then how many hours have you dedicated to advancing your Talent this week?
  7. If you are a caregiver for a family member, how many hours have spent actively providing Care-giving services to your relative this week?
  8. If you are an active duty, reserve or national guard member, how many hours of Military service have you performed this week?
  9. If you are Self-employed, meaning that you own a legitimate business that generates a weekly or monthly net income (revenue- expenses), How many hours have you labored in order to earn money while being self-employed?
  10. How many hours have you Volunteered at nonprofits or charities this week?

The activities represented by those questions result in a Top 10 List of success-focused activities. Obviously, there are other notable weekly activities, such as cooking and eating nutritious meals; cleaning your home; yard work; fitness workouts; dating; driving or commuting; social media; playing video games plus spending time with friends and family, etc. While those activities are important, they did not make our Top 10 list of success-focused activities.
