Recently heard that some college students and college graduates disparage minimum wage jobs. At O•L•A, we consider all honest work to be important, regardless of the wages paid. Furthermore, an individual who earns minimum wage can actually be more of a responsible leader than those who earn much more. This is another example of what distinguishes O•L•A from other competitors: We focus on responsible leadership, not on how to belittle others.
Our mission is, “To ensure all contribute toward our shared destiny.” It’s impossible to do that if you belittle other human beings. If you believe, due to appearance, wealth or education, that you are more important than another person, then an event (such as a car accident that results in a permanent disability) or a circumstance (such as imprisonment) may change your mind.
At O•L•A, our leadership pillars include integrity, perseverance, and commitment to worthwhile goals. None of those things depend on your income. You do not need money in order to be a responsible leader! In fact, there are many wealthy people who are irresponsible leaders. An individual’s wealth does not turn bad decisions into good ones. Your mindset is what will determine if you will become a responsible leader. Focus on responsible leadership principles, not necessarily on what generates the most money.
